In October of 2017, I visited the King Ranch, and this is one of the shots from that trip. The following spring, our staff visited the Texas ranch, saddle shop and museum and continued working on a special issue that spotlighted the iconic ranch. We never used this photo in that August 2018 issue, but the image remains one of my favorites. James Clement III, the horse division manager, was feeding broodmares before sun up. He’s been the driving force behind the King Ranch stepping up the marketing and advancement of its ranch horse program. Because of that, I like how he’s the central figure in this photo, and I also like how two horses are like bookends. Considering the legacy of ranching innovation and family involvement, and knowing the crucial role horses have always played in King Ranch history, this photo is pretty symbolic. And fittingly, the ranch was presented the AQHA Best Remuda Award in the fall of 2019.
