The big news of the day at Woodbine Racetrack on Saturday was the performance of the three-year-old colt Newstome, who dominated the field in the first stakes race of the season at the Etobicoke oval.

Pronounced News-to-me, the grey son of Goldencents out of Newstouse won the $100,000 Woodstock Stakes by a commanding 5 1/2 lengths, beating Untitled thanks to a huge charge on the outside in the stretch crossing the wire in 1:09.99 on a perfect ride by veteran jockey Luis Contreras.

“I got a great trip,” said Contreras, of his ride on the Maryland-bred Newstome. “He broke running and I was able to save ground and get in the stalk position. In the middle of the turn, I was just loaded with a lot of horse and turning for home, he just ‘go.’”

Sent post-ward as the 5-1 second choice, Newstome paid $13.90 to win.

Saturday’s card featured a pair of prep races for the Queen’s Plate, the Woodstock Stakes for three-year-olds and the $100,000 Star Shoot, for three-year-old fillies. Both stakes attracted a number of notable contenders for the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks (Aug.15) and the $1 million Queen’s Plate, moved to Sept.12 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
