BLM Wild Horse mustang2Press release from the BLM:

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in coordination with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office is offering one halter-trained and up to eight saddle-trained wild horses for adoption. The virtual competitive-bid event will start at 6 p.m. Pacific Time via Zoom on Thursday, March 25.

The BLM gathered the wild horses from overpopulated herds on western ranges as part of its mission to manage healthy horses on healthy public lands. The horses were trained by inmates in the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center wild horse training program in Elk Grove. The training program, established in 2013, provides adopters with horses that have a sound start in their training, while providing inmates valuable professional and life skills.

“Adopters have had great success with horses from this training program,” said Amy Dumas, manager of the BLM-California Wild Horse and Burro Program. “We look forward to placing these animals in loving homes.”

Anyone interested can view horses and information about each animal and learn about the training program at www.blm.gov/cawildhorseadoption.

To bid on horses, prospective adopters are required to:

    • Obtain the BLM-issued bidder number to participate by submitting the completed adoption application to Amy Dumas at [email protected] before Wednesday, March 24, at 4 p.m.

Adopters must meet BLM’s qualifications and facility requirements. Details can be found at BLM.gov/whb. Horses must be picked up from the R3C training facility in Elk Grove on April 10th.

More information is available from Dumas at 916-978-4678.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, which was passed unanimously by Congress and signed into law on December 15, 1971. To mark this anniversary, the BLM is holding a series of events around the country highlighting the value of wild horses and burros as enduring symbols of our national heritage. Beauty–12620187
HMA: Diamond Hills South, NV
Color: Black
Height: 14
Age: 9

Beauty is a doll.  When I asked JP about her, his response was “Oh, she’s so sweet.” She has a great, easy-going temperament and lovely conformation. She is an athletic horse who could excel in many disciplines. As of February, they are just starting to ride her. Stay tuned for updates.

Big River—16224810
HMA: Triple B
Color: Bay
Height: 14.3
Age: 5

Big River is a nicely conformed gelding.  He has good bone and a nice frame. He is athletic and could do well as ranch horse, trail horse, or in many disciplines.  As of February, he has had a few rides. He is still learning what all this riding means.  He is a little shy and is learning what his relationship with humans should be. Stay tuned for updates.

Duchess—13224958
HMA: Triple B
Color: Bay
Height: 14.1
Age: 8

Duchess is a lovely mare.  She has been in training for a bit longer than the others. She has been under saddle since August 2020.  She does well in and out of the arena.  She also rates well.  You may ask why she was not offered in September or November?  Simply because she was not as far along as the others in those events.   By the April pick up day, she will be even more ready for you!

Ebony—15623904
HMA: Rock Creek
Color: Black
Height: 14
Age: 6

Ebony is a mare that likes to go!  She prefers to trot; no time for walking.  If you want a lazier horse to mosey down the trail, keep looking, Ebony is not your pony!  She has a very loving demeanor.   She would be good for at least an intermediate rider who prefers a horse with a spark. She has the potential to excel in many disciplines.

Estrella—16224934
HMA: Triple B
Color: Bay
Height: 14.1
Age: 5

Estrella is a sweetheart.  Sometimes she plays “hard to catch” in the pasture and the guys are working on that.  Once you catch her, she is very soft and responsive. She melts when you pet her forehead. As of February, she is doing well with her first few rides. Some of the newer trainers are riding her. Thus far, she is a pretty chill horse under saddle.  Stay tuned for updates.

Mississippi—15187067
HMA: Reveille
Color: Bay
Height: 14.1
Age: 6

Mississippi is a nice, calm gelding. He’s been under saddle since November.  He has a lovely lope and a quiet mindset.  At this point, he just needs more miles. And a little softening, as we all do!  He has the potential to do many things.  Mississippi would do well with an intermediate rider who wants an easy-going horse.

Murphy—18628153
HMA: Snowstorm Mountains, NV
Color: Buckskin
Height: 13.3
Age: 2

Murphy is a young gelding that was returned to BLM as a halter-trained horse. He is not saddle trained as he looks like a short two-year-old and needs some time to grow. He was low in the pecking order at his former home and may be a little behind on his growth.  He has a very friendly, puppy dog demeanor.  He follows one of the trainers around as he does his chores. Murphy has lots of potential once he grows up a little more and can start saddle training. In the meantime, he enjoys learning new things and being in your pocket asking for attention.  If you are looking for a fun horse to start under saddle, Murphy could be your guy.  He has a good foundation of groundwork. Because is not saddle started, he is being offered starting at $125.

Rafael—12185821
HMA: Born in Ridgecrest Corrals
Color: Sorrel
Height: 14.3
Age: 7

Rafael is a very soft, responsive gelding with a sensitive accelerator.  We don’t want you to get left behind! He enjoys arena work but is a bit flighty outside the safety of the arena.  Flighty meaning he will shy off to a side, so he is laterally athletic.  He does move forward and, as mentioned, laterally well. We think he might do well with arena-based disciplines for an intermediate to advanced rider with a good seat.  If you are a soft, relaxed, confident rider, then Rafael could bloom under your quiet guidance.
