Archaeologists have discovered the remains of three horses in the suburbs of Pompeii. The ancient Roman city near Naples was destroyed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius nearly 2000 years ago.

The remains were unearthed at the site where a stable once stood. They have been shown to the media.

One horse was found with harnesses and a bronze and leather saddle. It is believed to have been owned by a general or other high-ranking military officer.

The archaeologists believe the owner was preparing the horse to escape the eruption.
