HARRISBURG — On Oct. 27 through 30, Clinton County 4-H horse exhibitors belonging to The Mane Attraction horse club, and one from Susquehanna Haybalers club, traveled to Harrisburg to compete in the state 4-H competition at the Farm Show complex.
These nine riders had previously placed and scored at the regional equestrian event held at the Grange Fair grounds in July, enabling them to move on to the state level.
In Harrisburg, all nine of the competitors placed in the top 10 in the state for their events, with two of those riders taking first place. The 10 different contest categories had 82 separate events that took place over the span of four days, with two active rings each day — and some classes having as many as 32 entries.
This required that most riders awake before dawn to groom their horse, shine their tack, then donning their riding apparel and warming up their horse before going into the ring. The amount of tack, feed and other equipment needed by the group’s horses was so great that it took up three full 10’x10′ stalls.
Lauren Johnson brought home the champion ribbon in the Beginner English Equitation class. This class is judged on the rider including the correctness of their seat, hands, legs and the ability of the rider to communicate clearly with their horse. Lauren is in her third year of the 4-H horse program and leases the horse that she competes with.
PHOTO PROVIDED
Evan Dubbs
Evan Dubbs placed as champion in Western Ranch Riding. In this class, the rider must direct the horse to reflect the versatility, attitude and movement of a working ranch horse. The horse’s performance should simulate a horse riding outside the confines of an arena and that of a working ranch horse.
Evan has been in the 4-H horse program for eight years and has overcome the loss of a horse and a bout of COVID, to finally ribbon at states this year. He also placed in the top five in Western Grooming and Showmanship.
Other club members who placed in the state finals are:
Abby Simcox — Top 5 EWD Showmanship, EWD Equitation and EWD Trail
Addy Gilmore — Top 10 Breed Type Hunter Under Saddle

This outcome is unprecedented, particularly for a smaller rural club and is bolstered by the volunteerism of several parents and the community of participants, many of whom travelled to the event to support and cheer on their fellow club members who had advanced to the state level.
“I believe all of them had a personal best at this show,” 4-H Organizational Leader, Sarina Bower, stated.
Each of the nine competitors put in hundreds of hours of work and practice to achieve their placement and to build their skill and knowledge base to where they are today. At their monthly 4-H meetings, they learn everything from animal husbandry (including nutrition, grooming and basic first aid), to repairing fences, building jumps with carpentry skills and reassembling a de-constructed bridle. These are foundational skills to support horse care and are just as important as the member’s riding skills.
The 4-H year runs from October to September. New members aged 8-18 may enroll at any time until March.

National Western Stock Show Rodeo, Friday, Jan. 14
DENVER, Colo. (Jan. 7, 2023) — Opening Saturday at the National Western Stock Show presented by Centura has become a fan favorite for rodeo contestants and enthusiasts over the past 10 years.
This year was no exception as the 11th Super Saturday showdown between contestants representing Colorado rodeos and world-renown rodeos dueled it out for winner-take-all prizes of $8,000. Along the way to the final championship, the tournament-style competition paid the competitors as well with a total of $90.000 paid during three performances.
Wyatt Casper, who lives in the panhandle of Texas, got his second-consecutive championship here in the saddle bronc riding. Casper was part of the world team representing Rodeo Houston. He finished second in the world performance to advance to the semi-finals where he was the best representative of that team. He went on to the finals and got the win with an 82-point effort on Painted Fling from Kirsten Vold Rodeo Company.
The bull riding winner is coming off of his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification. Tristen Hutchings finished third in the race for a world championship last year and is carrying that momentum over into 2023. Hutchings was on the Colorado team representing the Greeley Stampede. He watched as world team member Brody Yeary came off early and knew all he needed was to get a score to add $8,000 to his checking account. It worked in a big way when he scored 87 points on Cervi Brothers Rodeo’s Skin Walker.
Keenan Hayes from Hayden, Colorado won the bareback riding for the world team for the San Angelo (Texas) Rodeo with a big 90-point score. The world team also got the win in the steer wrestling when Stetson Jorgensen stopped the clock in 4.7 seconds for the Dodge City (Kansas) Roundup. In the barrel racing team Colorado was at the top of the leaderboard when Brittney Barnett stopped the clock in 15.268 seconds. Barnett was entered here for the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo at Colorado Springs.
The 117th National Western Stock Show will be host to a cross-cultural event with the Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza in the Denver Coliseum on Sunday. Performances are at 2 and 6:30 p.m.

It’s 8:30 a.m. and Gypsy, Carina, Echo and Fanfare are getting ready for class.
An hour ago, they were fed breakfast in the warmth of MSU’s barns, which usually consists of hay and other grains. They’ll need it for the big day of learning ahead of them.
Gypsy, Carina, Echo and Fanfare are not students. They are among the 62 horses MSU keeps on its farms and today, they are being used for Fundamentals of Horsemanship, a class that teaches students how to improve their horsemanship and riding abilities.
Animal science senior Jessica Crane grabs a brush to use on Gypsy. This is how every class begins: each of the four students cleans up their horse before “tacking” them, or adding the necessary riding equipment.
Brushing, tacking, then riding.
“If there’s dirt under the tack it can annoy them,” Crane said. “It’s like if you had crusted mud on your shoulder and you put a t-shirt on, it’s gonna feel nasty and itchy and we want the horses to be as comfortable as possible.”
Its not just about physical comfort, through. Doing this helps create a connection between the horse and the rider. Animal sciences freshman Abby Shaw said that the best way to bond with a horse is to spend time with them – grooming and brushing them. She enjoys spending this time with the horses before getting on.
As the students tack the horses with martingales, saddle pads, western saddles, leg boots and a bridle, their instructor, Paula Hitzler, leans against a nearby barrel with her hands in her pockets, observing.
Occasionally, she shouts out corrections:
“Becca, make sure that you’re doing this from the side, from his side, not from directly in front of him. Because if he bolts forward, you’ll get knocked down.”
“Go ahead and get one of the bigger pads, that one’s kind of short.”
“He’s going to be kind of funny about his right ear, so lift that cavesson off and put it over.”
Hiztler, an MSU alumni, has been riding since she was nine and working with horses professionally since she was 18. She came back to MSU in 1989 after the university was in need of a full time farm manager of teaching and research center.
At the time, Hitzler was working in Sonoma, California. MSU had no horse classes – at least not like the one that exists today.
This changed shortly after Hitzler became manager. She’s been teaching the class for 32 years.
But while the university has only been teaching classes like this since Hitzler’s arrival, MSU has a long history of breeding horses.
“We’re the third oldest Arabian breeding program in the country,” Hitzler said. “They’ve been breeding Arabian horses since 1938. We have won many, many national championship titles with students, we have been nominated as a top ten breeder of national champions on several occasions, so the quality of the horses is exceptional.”
Hitzler said MSU runs its center like an industry farm, doing everything from breeding horses, shipping semen, foaling up mares, starting two year olds under saddle and showing at a national level.

“When we have students that take these programs, I’m trying to prepare many of them to go into the industry in some capacity,” Hitzler said.
Not all students that take the class want to work in the horse industry, and not all of them come into class with the same levels of experience. While Crane and Shaw have been riding most of their lives, some have a much more basic understanding of horsemanship and riding skills.
Despite this, all students agree that Hitzler’s expert knowledge is what makes this class so special.
Crane said she learned more from Hitzler in one semester than she did in years of riding beforehand. Shaw attests she learned more from Hitzler on day one than she has from a trainer in her entire life.
Once the horses are tacked up, the students walk them from the main barn over to the indoor training arena. Today, the class is focusing on circling, a skill that Hitzler said is very challenging, since the rider needs to keep their horse bent and forward in order to maneuver them around a cone.
They begin with a warmup and some balancing activities. Hitzler gives notes on skills. She instructs on how students should hold reins as they ride. She corrects their form, telling them to arch their backs, to stay tall.
She arranges the four cones to create a wide oval, which she stands in the middle of while the students practice circling around her.
Just like while tacking, Hitzler shouts advice to the group.
“Think about riding a horse like driving a car – you have to drive it, you can’t just sit there and be a passenger. You have to communicate using your legs, your seat, your hands in advance to tell them exactly how you want to go.”
This need for constant communication with the horse is something Hitzler emphasizes throughout the lesson. It’s easy, Hitzler said, for students to get frustrated while learning this, especially if they’ve ridden before.
“What’s frustrating for students is they’ve ridden, they’ve not fallen off very much, so they think they’re advanced,” Hitzler said. “My definition of advanced is a lot more in depth than what I think students think of themselves.”
As one student struggles with her horse, Hitzler notices she might be close to crying. This is something Hitzler says is common in this class, but not frowned upon.
Crane, who is taking this class for the third time and is making perfect circles around her cone, speaks up, saying that she cried the first time she tried this skill.
She says she’s fine now and she wore waterproof mascara.
“But if you cry, I cry,” Hitzler said. “That’s the problem. So if you’re gonna cry, I will have to wear waterproof mascara.”
Once they master circling, everything after that will come much easier, Hitzler said, and by the end of the semester, they will be different students. But to get there, she said it will take a lot of hard work, something Hitzler believes is necessary to succeed in any aspect of life.
A final time, Hitzler speaks to the group:
“Did you know that’s a metaphor for life? That if you never are challenged in life, how do you expect to become strong in your character, to have resilience, to know that it’s okay to fail and you still can be successful? You have to work through the failure of it. If you quit when you fail, you’re going to be quitting your whole life. So all of these things could be a metaphor for how you handle challenges in your life,” Hitzler said.
Next class, they’ll all get back on their horses and try again.

Trouble comes for opponents when the Texas Tech equestrian team steps into the arena at a competition.
Trouble also comes when his rider, Kaycee Edwards, leads him into the Wilson Arena at the Texas Tech Equestrian Center.
As the horse coordinator officer for the university’s equestrian team, the senior — on the English horse team — is responsible for ensuring the health and well-being of the horses and managing communications between the center, where she works, and the team.
Upon arriving to the center, it’s hard not to be overwhelmed by the facilities and the acreage they cover. One whiff of the air when I stepped out of the car, and I knew I was in for an experience unlike any I have ever had.
After a few moments of observations, equestrian team practice began.
Edwards took her beloved 4-year-old horse, Trouble, out of his pen and brushes his coat. With clean hair, Trouble was tacked — that is, he came out equipped with a half and saddle pad, saddle, bridle, halter and reins — snd we were off to the arena as he let out a loud neigh.
Both the English and Western equestrian teams have two one-hour practices a week, and most members have multiple personal ride times in that span. These workouts are often led by Coach Danica Jorgensen, but sometimes officers offer instruction, too.
Each practice helps prepare the team for more than 50 competitions throughout the year.
Though there are horses at every turn, the arena is its own kind of peaceful. The sound of hooves and riders’ soft corrections to their treasured animals fill the air. Even from the stands, the connection between every rider and their horse is evident.
Edwards participates in the advanced practice, which is after the beginner and intermediate-level workouts. Before she and Trouble take the arena, the newer riders focus on having correct posture and control.
For Edwards, her goals are respecting leg, riding completely loose rein, being smooth and responsive and maintaining control. She begins with a few warmup laps and pep talks with Trouble. In complete silence — no music and no sudden movements in the arena — each rider is connected with their horse, seemingly focused on nothing else besides the ride.
With just one hour for a lot of work, the strictly scheduled practice began as Jorgensen rallied her team together to describe the stations set up. Right away, riders led their horses with warmup laps before heading into rail work and patterns, which help them perfect different positions and turns. Then, each works individually with their horses to finish the hour strong.
Though my ignorance shined while watching, my curiosity grew. Each move was particular, requiring a special attention to detail. Occasionally, Coach would correct the riders’ for the position of their hands, calling for “softer hands” or grip on the reins.
Even with minor errors, smiles painted the faces of each rider as they shared laughs about each other and their horses. One thing was clear during practice: This team loves each other and their horses.
Edwards says that’s her favorite part about being on the equestrian team; she has friends who share her love for hard work competition and share her same passion for horses — and they probably experience the same stress relief she does on Trouble when riding.
Pure joy and calmness radiated from Edwards as she described her horse’s personality and all that he has done for her. She admitted with sincerity that as she works on him, he does the same for her.
While on her saddle, she can leave behind the stress and worries about school and life — and the long to-do list in her mind disappears. The delight in her voice cannot be misheard when she talks about her time with Trouble.
Edwards says he is the first thoroughbred — a horse breed usually used for racing — that she’s trained since the beginning to become an equestrian competition horse. She credits her coaches and trainers for guiding her through the transition process.
As practice began to wind down, the tight-knit team took their horses for cool-down laps. Edwards untacked Trouble and hosed him off before putting liniment treatment on his legs and back to relieve any muscle soreness, stiffness and inflammation he might be feeling.
And then came time for dinner.
Together, we walked to his stall, and she tied him up to begin prepare his food: four pounds of Purina Ultium Competition mixed with a few large alpha pellets and his third flake of coastal hay for the day.
With a quick pat and kiss from Edwards, Trouble ended the evening with a warm feeling that was nothing close to what his name suggests. And a tired yet fulfilled Edwards said goodbye and drove away in her half-ton truck, ready to do it all again the next day.
The martial arts superstar will be galloping onto movie screens April 7.
More than two decades after martial arts superstar Jackie Chan teamed with Owen Wilson for the seriocomic Westerns Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights, he’s back in the saddle for Ride On, a contemporary action comedy set for an April 7 North American theatrical release.
Directed by Larry Yang, the Chinese-produced, English-subtitled movie has Chan cast as Luo, a washed-up stuntman who manages — with a little help from Red Hare, his beloved stunt horse — to ward off two debt collectors during an acrobatic confrontation. After video of the clash goes viral on social media, the debt collectors press their luck by returning to seek revenge — forcing Luo and Red Hare to engage in a series of high-risk activities that outdo even the most daring acts from their glory days.
Chan noted in a prepared statement that Ride On marks a return to his roots as a stunt man — and, eventually, lead player — in Hong Kong action flicks. “In the heyday of kung fu movies,” he said, “you fought for real, you risked your life by really racing a fast car and really riding a wild horse. The spirit was passed on from one generation to the next.”
“The story of a man and a horse depending on each other is really interesting,” added director Yang. “Moreover, the character Jackie plays this time is more down-to-earth than we’ve seen in his previous movies.”
