Gulfstream Park’s 20-cent Rainbow 6 will have a guaranteed pool of $1.25 million Saturday, and host and analyst Ron Nicoletti is swinging for the fences with a ticket costing $172.80.
First race post is 12:45 p.m. The Rainbow 6 sequence, which begins with the seventh race, includes the $100,000 Big Drama, $75,000 English Channel and $75,000 Honey Ryder.
“It’s always fun playing the Rainbow 6 and trying to become a millionaire, even more so when there’s a trio of competitive stakes races in the sequence,” said Nicoletti, who will use only two horses in the Honey Ryder on the turf.
RACE 7: 1-3-6-8
I went four-deep in the opening leg of the Rainbow 6. HANDSOME LIL DEVIL drops into this ‘non-winners of two-lifetime’ claimer after facing tougher with some success in a trio of $25,000 optional claimers on the turf. POSITIVE PHIL is cutting back to 7 ½ furlongs after hanging in the stretch when going a mile and a sixteenth last out. The turnback looks like a positive move for Phil. LOOKIN AT ROSES, a solid second at this level two starts back, drops, and adds blinkers, after coming up empty versus $30,000 ‘two-lifetime’ claimers going a mile last out. I also included SMELL OF ROSES, who turns back with speed, and Luis Saez in the saddle.
RACE 8: 3-2-6
I’m three deep in Race 8 with KID BOURBON, who goes back to the main track after making a six-wide move to finish second versus allowance company going a two-turn mile on the turf. Trainer Mark Hennig is 20% with the grass-to-dirt angle. OVERDELIVER, a sharp winner at the distance two starts back, stretches out after rallying from far back to finish second against $35,000 optional claimers going seven furlongs. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. has Irad Ortiz Jr. named to ride. GUMP, another from the Joseph Jr. barn, stretches out to a mile after pressing the pace and finishing third behind stablemate Overdeliver when they hooked up at seven furlongs last out.
RACE 9: 1-2
I’m using only 2 in the Honey Ryder with ENVOUTANTE, who is going back to the turf after the impressive maiden victory going a mile and a sixteenth on the main track. The $250,000 daughter of Uncle Mo, has speed, the rail and the breeding needed to use the inside post to her advantage. HIGHLAND GLORY, a full sister to Grade 1 stakes-placed Highland Sky, is stretching out to a mile and a sixteenth after following her maiden score going eight furlongs with a late-closing victory in the Sanibel Island.
RACE 10: 3-6-7
I’m going three deep in the Big Drama. I wanted some coverage, even though there’s a strong favorite with NETWORK EFFECT, who cuts back to seven furlongs after returning from the layoff to finish second – as the favorite – going a mile versus $62,500 optional claimers. Trainer Chad Brown has Ortiz Jr. atop the multiple graded stakes-placed son of Mark Valeski. HE HATE ME is wheeling back after breaking from the outside, stalking the pace and finishing third behind impressive winner Vekoma in the Sir Shackleton. And there’s horse-for-course play NOBLE DRAMA, who is back at his favorite racing venue after his two-race win streak, which included a victory in the $Sunshine Millions Classic, ended when he came up empty behind Trophy Chaser in the Grade 3 Challenger at Tampa.
RACE 11: 8-10-4
I’m three deep in the English Channel with PROVEN STRATEGIES. Beaten two lengths in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, he certainly has highlighted his class with consecutive victories over this course. ISLAND COMMISH is making his first start since following back-to-back victories on the Gulfstream Park West turf with a driving victory here in the Grade 3 Kitten’s Joy. Paco Lopez goes for his fourth consecutive victory on the son of Commissioner. GUFO, a half-brother to $1.7 million earner Hogy, makes his stakes debut after rallying strongly to defeat $75,000 optional claimers going nine furlongs here last out.
RACE 12: 5-10-4-9
I’m four-deep in the final leg with LA INCONDICIONAL, who steps up to face open-competition after drawing clear to defeat $14,000 ‘non-winners of three-lifetime’ claimers going a mile last out. HOTTY TODDY drops to the $16,000 level and gets the services of Ortiz Jr. after making a six-wide charge to finish fourth, beaten 1 ¼ lengths, against $20,000 state-bred optional claimers going a mile. BRITESIDEOFTHEROAD is dropping to this level while stretching out to a mile and a sixteenth (6: 2-1-1) after the chase-and-fade outing versus a solid group of $25,000 optional claimers. And I’m closing out my ticket with BEACH DREAMING, who goes to the Jose Gallegos barn after finishing a well-meant, but troubled, second last out.
