Introductory Horseback Ride

The one-hour trail ride is scheduled for Sunday, July 14, 2019, at 10 a.m. will be preceded by a brief lesson. The ride is geared to people who have an interest in becoming more familiar with English-style riding. Participants must be at least 9 years old and under 200 pounds. Riders between the ages of 9 to 12 years must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Registration is available online and in the Stable office through Thursday, July 11, 2019. Horse Care Workshop 102

Completion of Horse Care Workshop 101 is a prerequisite for this class. Students will explore more advanced topics such as nutrition, clipping, bandaging, and basic conformation. The workshops are offered on five consecutive Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon beginning Saturday, July 27, 2019.

The cost is $60 for Somerset County residents and $90 for non-residents. Registrations will be accepted until the first day of class. This workshop does not include riding. For more information, please call the stable office at 908-722-1200, ext. 5010.

Participation in the Horse Care Workshop 102 is a co- or prerequisite for this class. Students will explore more advanced topics to increase their awareness of equine behavior. The workshops are offered on five consecutive Saturdays from 1 to 3 p.m. beginning Saturday, July 27, 2019.

“Home On The Range” Introductory Horseback Ride

The one-hour trail ride scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 4, 2019 at 10 a.m. will provide an opportunity to become familiar with Western-style horseback riding. Participants must be at least 9 years old and weigh less than 200 pounds. Riders between the ages of 9 – 12 years must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Due to the equipment used, individuals must be at least 5’0” tall to participate in this western ride. Registration is available online and in the Stable office between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. through Aug. 1, 2019 Fee is $40 for Somerset County residents and $50 for non-residents. Fall Program Registation

Online and walk-in registrations for the fall lesson series will be accepted on a first come, first served basis beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2019. Lessons begin on Monday, Sept. 9, 2019, English style riding lessons will be offered for beginner through advanced jumping levels for juniors and adults. Trail and specialty classes are also offered. Lessons are one hour per week for ten consecutive weeks. Adult students at Beginner 2 level or higher may opt to ride for the first or last 5 weeks of lessons, as well as for the full 10-week session.

Junior riders must be a minimum age of 9 at time of registration. Riders must be under 225 pounds for non-jumping classes and under 200 pounds for classes over fences. Classification Cards must be shown by riders at registration (except basic beginners). Experienced English saddle riders who do not have a Lord Stirling Stable Classification Card should make an appointment to be evaluated prior to registration. Pony Tea Party

Children under age 13 and their parents will join the horses, ponies, and staff at Lord Stirling Stable for a Pony Tea Party featuring pony rides, hayrides, games, and other fun activities from 10 a.m. to 12 Noon on Sunday Aug. 18. Light refreshments will be served and guests are invited to wear their fancy tea party garb. Registration is available at the Stable office through Aug. 16, 2019. Fall Private Horse Hunter Pace

The Friends of Lord Stirling Stable and the Somerset County Park Commission will host a Hunter Pace open to private horse owners on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2019 beginning at 9 a.m.with the last team departing at 1 p.m.

The Hunter Pace consists of teams of two or three riders following a well-marked course approximately 7 miles in length with more than 30 fences up to 3’ in height. Fences 2’6” and higher are marked with a cone, and all fences have ample room to go around. Open, Family, Junior, Senior, and Hilltopper divisions are available.

Registration is done in person on the day of the event (pre-registration is not necessary). Entry fee for the Hunter Pace is $35 for juniors (under 18 years) and $40 for adults. Horse Care Workshops offer people a chance to gain experience and confidence around horses. Participants learn the proper way to groom and tack up a horse. The parts of the horse, saddle, and bridle are discussed. Students learn the different colors and breeds of horses, as well as the important role the farrier and veterinarian play in a horse’s life.

The workshops are offered on five consecutive Saturdays from 1 p.m.to 3 p.m.beginning Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019. The cost is $60 for Somerset County residents and $90 for non-residents. Friends Of Lord Stirling Stable Autumn Open House

Members of the Friends of Lord Stirling Stable will be on hand on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019 from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m.to share information about Lord Stirling Stable’s programs and events scheduled throughout the year. Stable tours will also be available. The program is free and pre-registration is not required.

Fall Nature Trail Ride

The Friends of Lord Stirling Stable will host their annual Fall Nature Ride on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2019, on the trails of Lord Stirling Stable, 256 South Maple Avenue in Basking Ridge, N.J. The ride will begin at 8:30 a.m. with check-in at 8 a.m.

People with little or no riding experience are welcome on the one-hour guided trail ride. Experienced English saddle riders may also enjoy this leisurely ride along the 18 miles of trails with their non-rider friends. Participants must be at least 9 years old and under 200 pounds. Riders between the ages of 9 – 12 years must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Participants are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

The fee for the Nature Ride is $35 for members of the Friends of Lord Stirling Stable and Lord Stirling Stable students; $40/Somerset County residents; and $50 for non-residents. Certified ASTM/SEI riding helmets and hard-soled boots or shoes with a well-defined heel are required and may be borrowed from the stable office. Pre-registration is required. Dog Days – A Very Silly Dog Show!

The Friends of Lord Stirling Stable will host “Dog Days-A Very Silly Dog Show” on Sunday, Oct.13, 2019. Registration will begin at 2:30 p.m. with the show commencing at 3 p.m. Classes include Best Costume; Pet/Owner Look-Alike; Best bark; and Best Tail Wagger. Information is available at www.flss.org.

Fall Festival

The Friends of Lord Stirling Stable will host the third annual Fall Festival that will feature themed hayrides, pony rides, and other child-friendly activities on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019 (rain date: Oct. 26) from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Additional information may be found at www.flss.org.

New Jersey 4-H Round-Up Benefit Hunter Pace
