Lakeside is preparing to host its annual Western Days events — a three-day rodeo plus a parade — from Aug. 27-29.

The 57th annual rodeo, sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and Womens Professional Rodeo Association, takes place at the Lakeside Rodeo Arena, 12584 Mapleview St. Shows start at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 27-28 and at 11 a.m. Aug. 29. Each performance will have bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing (and junior barrel racing) and bull riding. A special feature at each show is the Kids Stick Horse Race.

The rodeo is hosted by the nonprofit El Capitan Stadium Association, a volunteer organization that operates the Lakeside Rodeo facility as a yearlong fundraising site. Proceeds from the rodeo and other events benefit Lakeside youth organizations.

Hannah Dickerson, 2021 Miss Rodeo Lakeside, and Kaylee Tate, 2021 Junior Miss Rodeo Lakeside, will be at the rodeo and parade with members of their court. They will also appear with Rodeo the miniature horse from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 21 at Parkway Plaza Mall in El Cajon. A drawing for two tickets to the 2021 Lakeside Rodeo will be held.

Rodeo gates open 90 minutes before shows. Online ticket sales only at lakesiderodeo.com. Tickets are $25 adult, $15 child (12 and under). Children 2 and under admitted free but must sit on lap. Child carrier requires ticket purchase. For handicap or limited-mobility seating tickets, call (619) 561-4331.

San Diego County COVID-19 guidelines will be enforced. The rodeo has a “Clear Bag” policy, meaning only a clear vinyl tote, a one-gallon clear plastic bag, or a small clutch purse will be allowed. No backpacks. Spectators will pass through a security checkpoint at the main gate. Parking available in the main rodeo lot and at El Capitan High School, close to the rodeo grounds. Parking donation is $5.

The 56th annual Western Days Parade starts at 9:35 a.m. Aug. 28 from Woodside Avenue to Maine Avenue, hosted by the Lakeside Chamber of Commerce. Floats, local pageant queens and courts, bands and equestrians from all over the county will take part. This year’s theme is “Thank You, Healthcare Workers.” Grand marshal is Lakeside resident Dr. Benjamin “Ben” Aaron, the surgeon who removed the bullet from President Reagan after a 1981 assassination attempt. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs, pop-up shade or umbrellas, and cold beverages. There’s still time to participate in the parade; visit https://lakesidechamber.org/form/view/23367 for an application or call (619) 561-1031.

The Lakeside Historical Society hosts a pre-parade breakfast from 7-9:30 a.m. Aug. 28 at the Historic Olde Community Church, 9906 Maine Ave. Donation is $5 for ham and eggs, hash browns, biscuits and sausage gravy, coffee, juice, hot cocoa and milk. Featuring The Tradesmen Live Band. Call (619) 561-1886.
