The Colleton Saddle Club (CSC) sponsored a horse show at the Double D Arena on Saturday morning Jan. 25, a beautiful sunny, windy day.
The Rodeo Drive arena held dozens of prancing horses and nervous participants preparing for the various competitions from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Some participants brought campers or tents and set up to spend the day. Food was available and horse owners graciously allowed visitors to pet their animals.
Horse trailers were parked everywhere, serving as shade and feeding stations for horses.
Lawn chairs pervaded the area and while the bleachers were in no way full, the fans who were there made a lot of noise honoring their family members or favorite equestrians.
With children playing nearby, dogs on leashes, owners walking their horses to cool down, the show was a sight that is hundreds of years old. For anyone experiencing a horse show for the first time, it’s a relaxing and wonderful way to spend the day.
Colleton Saddle Club members and show participants meet often at various functions, so they have become somewhat like family and enjoy getting together to talk about anything and everything.
Located at 1670 Hendersonville Hwy. in Walterboro, the Colleton Saddle Club is a family friendly group, offering monthly play days as well as hosting National Barrel Horse Association shows.
“We are here for our youth,” said Christy Thompson, CSC president. “We are a family fun atmosphere. Our monthly play days consist of English, Western, barrels and games,” she said.
Looking into the future, a rodeo will be held at Double D Arena on May 1-2 at 1256 Rodeo Dr., Walterboro. Although the rodeo is not affiliated with the saddle club, they have taken on the responsibility of putting it together.
According to Thompson, it takes a good 3-4 months to get things together and ready for the rodeo. “We have to advertise, get vendors, sponsors and decorate. Not to mention getting all the cowboys and cowgirls ready,” she said.
Most of the cowboys and girls who attend the rodeo follow competitions all over the USA, but local cowboys and girls are urged to participate.
