Horse-themed weathervanes from the collection of the late equestrian champion

will be auctioned at Bonhams Los Angeles later this month.
Beach, who died in July 2020 at age 79, competed in a variety of English and Western disciplines, and won the U.S. Equestrian Federation’s annual Saddle Seat Medal Final Champions in 1956.
Throughout her life, her passion for horses led her from riding to collecting horse memorabilia. Select horse-themed weathervanes offered for sale include a molded gilt cooper horse jumping through a hoop weathervane made in the third quarter of 19th century, with a low estimate of $10,000; and a molded gilt copper and zinc rearing horse weathervane made in mid-19th century, with a low estimate of $8,000.
“For centuries weathervanes served as a simple means of detecting wind speed and direction, but by the 19th and 20th centuries they took on more of a decorative function —and they have since become a symbol of Americana collecting,”

a specialist of fine and decorative arts at Bonhams, said in a statement.
“Acquired over the past 20 years, Beach’s collection demonstrates not only the talent of the American folk artisans, but also the vital role of the horse in 19th-century American life,” she added.
The horse-themed weathervanes will be offered during a Bonhams sale titled “Home and Interiors” in Los Angeles on Jan. 26, both live and online.
