Spring Riding Lessons
Sign Up for E-News
English Saddle Balanced Seat riding lessons are offered at beginner through advanced jumping levels for juniors and adults. Trail, specialty, and flat (non-jumping) classes are also offered. Online and walk-in registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 9. Lessons begin on Monday, March 25, and meet one hour per week for ten consecutive weeks.
Junior riders must be a minimum age of 9 at time of registration. Riders must be under 225 pounds for flat classes and under 200 pounds for classes over fences. Participants must have a current Lord Stirling Stable classification card as proof of their riding level; experienced English saddle riders who do not have a Lord Stirling Stable classification card should make an appointment to be tested prior to registration. Dressage Show
This is a great opportunity for the experienced or green horse and rider to perform a Dressage Test in a fun, no-pressure environment. The show is hosted by the Friends of Lord Stirling Stable, and is scheduled for Sunday, March 17. Eleven divisions will be separated into two sections – one includes those riders with privately owned horses and the other includes Lord Stirling Stable students on school horses. Divisions include USDF Intro Level, Test 1 (walk/trot), Training Level Tests 1 through 4, First Level Tests 1 through 4, and two “Test of divisions. Quadrille, freestyle, and musical kur entries are also welcome. Please visit www.flss.org for further information.
Horse Care Workshop 101
The horse care workshops offer people a chance to gain experience and confidence around horses. Participants learn the proper way to groom and tack up a horse. The parts of the horse, saddle, and bridle are discussed. Students learn the different colors and breeds of horses, as well as the important role the farrier and veterinarian play in a horse’s life.
The workshops are offered on five consecutive Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. beginning Saturday, March 30. The cost is $60 for Somerset County residents and $90 for non-residents. Registrations will be accepted until the first day of class, space permitting. This workshop does not include riding.
Friends Of Lord Stirling Stable Spring Open House
Members of the Friends of Lord Stirling Stable will be on hand on Saturday, March 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to distribute and discuss information about Lord Stirling Stable’s programs and events scheduled throughout the year. Stable tours will also be available. The program is free and pre-registration is not required.
Spring Nature Trail Ride
The Friends of Lord Stirling Stable will host a Spring Nature Ride on Sunday, March 31 on the trails of Lord Stirling Stable beginning at 8:30 a.m. People with little or no riding experience are welcome on the one-hour guided trail ride. Experienced English saddle riders may also enjoy this leisurely ride along the 18 miles of trails with their non-riding friends. Junior riders (9 years of age and above) may participate if accompanied by an adult. Participants are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Certified ASTM/SEI equestrian helmets and hard-soled boots or shoes with a well-defined heel are required and may be borrowed from Stable office. Pre-registration is required. Forms and fee information are available online at www.flss.org and in the Stable office.
Private Horse Hunter Pace
Lord Stirling Stable invites riders and their horses to participate in the Private Horse Hunter Pace on Sunday, April 28. The goal of a Hunter Pace is to ride a marked course in teams of two or three riders. Ribbons are awarded to the 6 teams in each division that finish the course closest to the “ideal time” set by the Pace Team. The distance is approximately 6 to 8 miles with 30 to 40 fences. The jumps along the well-marked trail vary in height up to three feet with ample room to go around. Participants may register between 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Divisions are offered in Open, Family, Junior, Senior, and Hilltopper. All riders must wear an ASTM/SEI approved equestrian helmet. Western riders are welcome. This event is co-sponsored by the Friends of Lord Stirling Stable and SCPC Lord Stirling Stable.
Horse Care Workshop 102
Completion of Horse Care Workshop 101 is a prerequisite for this class. Students will explore more advanced topics such as nutrition, clipping, bandaging, and basic conformation. The workshops are offered on five consecutive Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 Noon beginning Saturday, May 4.
The cost is $60 for Somerset County residents and $90 for non-residents. Registrations will be accepted until the first day of class. This workshop does not include riding.
Horse Care Workshop 103
Participation in the Horse Care Workshop 102 is a co- or prerequisite for this class.
Students will explore more advanced topics to increase their awareness of equine behavior. The workshops are offered on five consecutive Saturdays from 1 to 3 p.m. beginning Saturday, May 4.
The cost is $60 for Somerset County residents and $90 for non-residents. Registrations will be accepted until the first day of class. This workshop does not include riding.
Mother’s Day Ride
This is the perfect opportunity for non-equestrians to join "the rider in the family" on a relaxing, walk-only trail ride. The ride, sponsored by The Friends of Lord Stirling Stable, will be conducted on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12 at 10 a.m. Registration is necessary; forms and additional information are available on the Friends’ web site at www.flss.org.
Friends Of Lord Stirling Stable Spring Open House
Members of the Friends of Lord Stirling Stable will be on hand on Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to distribute and discuss information about Lord Stirling Stable’s programs and events scheduled throughout the year. Saturday Dog Walks
Weekly “Dog Walks” provide owners and their canine companions an opportunity to explore the beautiful trails at Lord Stirling Stable. Walks begin at 10:30 with check-in at 10:15. (Spring/summer hours in effect May 27 – check-in at 9:15 a.m.)
Registration is $3 per dog and all pets must be leashed and kept under control at all times.
