Competition showcased English, Western-style riding

BIG RAPIDS — Controlling an over 800-pound animal isn’t an easy task, but riders in the Mecosta County Fair’s horse and pony show made it look simple in the versatility and team competition Tuesday afternoon.

Participants brought their equine companions to compete in versatility which included western style, English style, and individual style grading. Horses and riders also got some help from family and friends with the timed saddle switch between riding sessions.

Riding sessions focused on patterns of the horse and the capability of the rider to control the animal’s movements and speed.

According to HorseandRider.com, there are significant differences in equipment between English and Western riding. A particular difference is the saddles used.

The Western saddle is larger and heavier than an English saddle. The western saddle allows the weight of the rider to be spread over a larger area of the horse’s back which makes it more comfortable, especially for long days chasing cows.

The English saddle is designed to allow the rider to have closer contact with the horse’s back.

Horses and ponies of various breeds shined under the sun during the competition that had challenges like speed racing around barrels and speed adjustments.

Horse and pony shows continue throughout the week. For more information and a schedule of events, visit the Mecosta County Fair’s website at www.mecostafreefair.com
