Three days of horse shows got underway Sunday at the Logan County Fair with the Performance Horse Show in the Exhibit Center.
The day started out with showmanship, where the classes are divided into seniors, intermediate and juniors based on the age of the exhibitor. The top showman in each class can enter the Round Robin Showmanship Contest this Friday, where participants will try their hands at exhibiting the various types of livestock shown at the fair.

From there, the entries were again sorted by age, but this time it was the age of the horse that made a difference. Large classes gave judge Pam Nicholls plenty to choose from in picking her favorite. There were seven entries in the Junior Mares, which includes female horses age 5 and younger; and 15 in the Aged Mares class. After selecting the top two from each of those classes, the judge then got to select the Grand Champion and Reserve Overall Mares, which were awarded to Kashlyn Gordanier and Berkley Gardiner, respectively.
The Junior Gelding had just two entries, but the 22 entries in Aged Geldings had to be divided into two heats, allowing Nicholls to sort out the top 10 entries before picking the first and second placers. For the Overall Geldings, grand champion was awarded to Hayden Walker, with Gordanier winning the reserve.
Then it was time to saddle up the horses, with exhibitors demonstrating their horsemanship skills in English Equitation, Western Equitation and Reining in the indoor arena, while an obstacle course of sorts was set up in the north arena for the Trail competition.
Nicholls, who judged the halter classes as well as equitation and reining, grew up in Wyoming, where she both showed and judged horses through 4-H. She attended Colorado State University for her undergrad and veterinary schooling, graduation with a bachelor’s in equine sciences in 2009 and completing vet school in 2015. She judged while at CSU in 2008, and has been judging 4-H and open shows ever since. She is now working as a small animal veterinarian in Berthoud, and lives in Platteville.
On Monday, the indoor arena hosted the Junior Ranch Horse Show, featuring ranch riding, ranch horsemanship, cowhorse, team roping, breakaway roping and ranch trial contests. For the final day of the horse show, today’s Junior Gymkhana includes goat tying, barrels, flags, poles and keyhole. An awards ceremony will follow the 9 a.m. show.
