Belfast — SeaHorse Stables offers competitive horseback riding, with a strong, growing group of youngsters who participate in fall and winter shows.

Team SeaHorse competes in Interscholastic Equestrian Association Hunt Seat, Zone 1, which encompasses the six New England states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachussets, Rhode Island and Connecticut. There are 10 zones in the United States.

The team’s coaches are Meghan Oathout of SeaHorse Stables and Rebecca Chernin of East Ridge Stables of Corinth.

The travel team’s young competitors include Nina Miller, Mia Rae, Allie Jones, Hannah Jones, Sage Oathout, Shelby Hooper, Allie Tardiff, Sylvia Lee, Zoe Maltese, Heidi Goodwin, Addison Turner, Taylor Thomas, Jaedon Sanborn, Camille-Rose Bandy, Brynn Newson and Sam Kinney.

SeaHorse Stables is owned and operated by Amy Miller.

IEA was established in 2002 as a national organization for equestrians from fourth through 12th grades as an opportunity to compete in the fall and winter. The three disciplines supported are Hunt Seat, Western and Dressage. Students do not need to own their own horse to compete, and instead use the farm’s lesson horses.

Weekly student lessons and monthly team lessons keep riders sharp and ready to compete at their level.

The SeaHorse Stables group fundraises to financially afford to travel to horse shows within its region and zone for points, and if enough are collected on an individual or team basis after five horse shows, it will qualify to compete in the zone finals and possibly even the national finals.

The 2021 Hunt Seat National Finals will be April 23-25 at the Georgia National Fairgrounds & Agricenter in Perry, Ga.

SeaHorse Stables was established in 2014.

“We joined up with IEA in order to offer horseback riding — which is primarily a solo competitive sport — as a group sport, and to help further educate equestrians about horsemanship and sportsmanship, team ethics and opportunities in the horse world,” Amy Miller said.

In 2015, SeaHorse Stables hosted its first small middle and high school team with only six riders. This year, SeaHorse Stables is collaborating with Chernin and East Ridge Stables as the team has grown to 16 strong, with all ages and grades represented.

The first horse show for SeaHorse Stables will be on Sunday, Oct. 4, and SeaHorse Stables will host its first IEA show on Sunday, Oct. 18. Teams from Damariscotta and York also will compete in the late-October show at SeaHorse Farms.
