Ever daydreamed about chasing down outlaws on your faithful steed, ol’ Fury? Well, mosey on over to El Dorado Frontier in Long Beach, pardner.
Patrick Wolovich, owner of the mini-theme park at the city’s sprawling El Dorado Park, amped up the attraction’s cowboy motif by opening a new Wild West merry-go-round — the Crystal Corral Carousel — on Saturday, Dec., 14.
Four years ago, Wolovich bought the mini-train ride that has steamed along at the park for 25 years.
“The former owner decided to retire and that’s when everything started,” Wolovich said. “It took us a while to get all the permits and fix things up to the way we wanted it. But this was just the first piece.”
Now the train has a saddle pal in the new rollicking-ly rustic merry-go-round.
“I love carousels, too, and I thought it would be a good staple for the frontier, so we finally bought one from someone in Florida,” Wolovich added. “We added an original Western theme storyline and music soundtrack.”
“The artwork on the carousel was beautiful and the music was great,” said Michele York of Lakewood, who brought grandchildren Aaron and Connor Woods on Saturday’s opening day. “They were yelling ‘giddy-up horsey’ as they rode it and pretended to be cowboys.”

“It must be what it was like for the cowboys to ride from town to town back in the Old West,” said Marisa Ramos, 11, of Long Beach.
“I liked how it kept going up and down … and it was fast,” added her brother, Alex, 9.
Wolovich persuaded more than 30 people from the community to sponsor each horse on the merry-go-round.

“I was blown away by this carousel,” said one of those sponsors, L.A. County Firefighter Matthew Cuzar, who has lived in Long Beach for 18 years.
“I heard a patron today say it’s like a mini-Knott’s Berry Farm, which was a great compliment,” Cuzar said.
“The carousel totally transported me to to Old West,” he added. “I felt like I was Clint Eastwood in one of those Western movies.”
If you go
There will be a tree-lighting ceremony at the park on Thursday night, Dec. 19, 4:30 to 8 p.m. with night-time carousel and train rides as well as a visit from Santa.
El Dorado Frontier’s normal hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday only.
