More than 2,500 people are headed to the state fairgrounds in Phoenix for the celebration of Western life that is the Arizona National Livestock Show.
That 70-year tradition has typically included five days of activities such as a kids rodeo and working-horse competition. This year will also offer a new event, the BBQ Stampede.
But the star of the show is the livestock. The Arizona National Livestock Show is one of the top destinations in the West for exhibitors of cattle, sheep, swine and horses. It’s also a premier showcase for young ranchers.
The Arizona show is one of only four junior livestock events in the country and includes exhibitors 12 and younger.
Considering that some of the competing livestock will be auctioned off at the conclusion of the show, a barbecue competition seems like a natural fit. The BBQ Stampede will be the first stop in the Kansas City Barbecue Society’s upcoming season and grillmasters will compete for $10,000 in prize money.
The cooks will compete in the categories of brisket, chicken, (pork) ribs and pork. Unfortunately, the competition BBQ will not be for sale but there will be other tasty smoked meats available.
“The barbecue being prepared by the contestant will not be available to the public, only the official judges of the Kansas City Barbecue Society,” show spokesman Matt Kalinowski said via email. “But, yes, there will be other vendors selling BBQ and all other kinds of foods on site.”
Two of the most popular parts of the show are the Lil Buckaroo Rodeo and the working-horse competition.
The Lil Buckaroo Rodeo features kids ages 4-6 competing in sheep riding. The competition begins on Dec. 29 and the top two riders in each age group will compete in the finals on Dec. 31.
The working-horse competition showcases the teamwork between horse and rider as they complete tasks associated with ranch work. In addition to spins, circles, stops and lead changes, the teams will drive and rope a cow.
Western art and gear, including sculptures, paintings, leather and silver work, will be displayed and sold in the Cowboy Classics Gallery. Sales from the art show will go toward the Arizona National Livestock Show scholarship fund. Each year the show raises about $40,000 for students who have taken part.
And if you’re looking to take your backyard game of cornhole to the next level, there will be a cornhole competition on Dec. 29.
